Where will I be based?

You will be based with one of the NHS Scotland Health Boards doing a variety of management and leadership roles for the three years of the Scheme. This is a national management training scheme for NHS Scotland and you could be based anywhere in Scotland. The more flexible you can be – the more you will get out of the Scheme.

If you want a career in the NHS and to rise to senior levels of responsibility, you will need to get a range of experience. This usually means working in more than one area during your career. We recommend reading the biographies on this site to get a flavour of the range of experience that people have had. There are often great opportunities for good work experience and advancement out with the central belt.

A place on this Scheme is a real opportunity, if not a chance in the lifetime, for a great career in the NHS. You will be exposed to the most senior people in the NHS, its strategic thinking and its competing demands. Developing a broad overview as well as specific skills is very important.

In addition to working with your host Boards, you may be asked to travel throughout Scotland in support of your own development. This may include staying away from your host Board for periods up to four weeks.
